There is another lesser-known CRM, which stands for ‘cause-related marketing’, which is about connecting one organisation with a non-profit organisation or charity for the purposes of mutual benefit. That connection may be used to support a cause financially, in kind or by helping to raise awareness.

Peer-to-peer pioneer

Eight law firms have borrowed over £500,000 through commercial peer-to-peer lending, an innovative form of financing which some experts predict could one day replace banks.

Lender Funding Circle says it has lent a total of £500,000 to eight legal practices: three from the north-west, one from the north-east and the rest from the south-east. Two more peer-to-peer lenders are planning to enter the legal market.

Abu Qatada treaty a triumph for human rights

Omar Othman or Abu Qatada (‘The Palestinian’) is destined to hit the headlines at least a couple more times. Once will be when the Jordanian parliament ratifies a newly negotiated mutual legal assistance treaty with the UK (said to be imminent). And then again when he departs of his own free will after it has come into force, as promised by his counsel. This will be portrayed by the home secretary as the successful negotiation of a series of obstructive court judgments. Lawyers, collectively and individually, should recognise it for what it really is: a triumph for human rights.

South-east Asia’s biggest economy has been expanding steadily over the past decade. Growth was 6.2% in 2012, and although it slowed down in the first quarter of 2013, the archipelago remains an attractive investment destination, thanks to well-developed energy and resources sectors and its burgeoning book of business related to sharia-compliant banking and finance.

Ombudsman claims wider territory

The handler of complaints about solicitors wants greater scope to investigate all professional services that have a legal dimension.

The Legal Ombudsman today called for a broader approach, to mirror changing consumer behaviour and innovations in industry and legal services.

The call came as the organisation revealed that the number of complaints fell in 2012/13 from 74,420 the previous year to 71,195.
