Online advice: more out of less

An independent commission, launched on Monday, will look at how to develop strategies to cope with the impending cuts to public funding for legal aid. The chair of this commission, Lord Low, has been reported as saying that this will be about getting ‘more out of less’.

Many industries are realising that more efficient service delivery can significantly improve value. The provision of services online is the most obvious practical example of efficient service delivery. Pro bono organisations like LawWorks – in an attempt to get more out of less – are also exploring this option.

Mis-selling fear as SRA moves to relax rules on financial advice

Solicitors are to be allowed to refer clients onto any financial adviser, regardless of whether they are independent or not.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority is set this week to relax the rule insisting lawyers’ clients can be referred only to independent advisers.

Instead, solicitors will be permitted to send legal services consumers to advisers who may be tied into offering a particular financial product.

Independent advisers condemned the decision as putting solicitors in danger of mis-selling claims.

Profession helps law schools to step up pro bono advice

The number of law schools offering pro bono legal advice has risen significantly thanks to a boost in support from solicitors, a report published this week has found.

The report by pro bono charity LawWorks showed a 40% increase over the last five years in the number of law schools providing pro bono advice.

Some 65% of all law schools in England and Wales are now actively engaged.

The Law Society funded a three-year project through LawWorks, aimed at supporting law schools to do pro bono work. The project finished in November 2010.
