Immigration bill prompts concern

Measures in the immigration bill announced in today’s Queen’s speech prompted strong reactions from specialist lawyers, welfare campaigners and business.

Nichola Carter, head of immigration at niche London firm Carter Thomas, described the proposals as ‘extremely worrying’.

Requiring landlords to become responsible for immigration control by checking the status of their tenants ‘risks exposing individuals to unlawful interference of their right to private life’, she said.

Law Society warns Home Office over immigration cap

The Law Society has today made a submission to the Home Office warning that its proposed limits on non-EU highly skilled migration could damage the legal sector.

The submission follows concerns voiced by Liberal Democrat business secretary Vince Cable this week that immigration limits are damaging British industry.

The Law Society said the proposals will threaten the UK’s position as a prominent legal centre, severely restricting law firms’ overseas work and their ability to employ international lawyers.

Immigration cap will ‘strangle’ City law firms, Chancery Lane warns

The government’s plan to impose an annual cap on immigration will ‘strangle’ City law firms, the Law Society warned today.

The cap will ‘severely restrict’ firms’ ability to conduct overseas work; prevent firms from attracting overseas lawyers and moving employees to London from their international offices; and damage the UK legal sector’s reputation, Chancery Lane said.

The cap could force firms and their clients to relocate transactional work to offices in other jurisdictions, the Society cautioned.

Nearly a third of ‘trusted’ immigration firms could face closure following the outcome of the Legal Services Commission’s bid round last week, solicitors’ groups have warned.

Lawyers also foresaw more bad news ahead for civil legal aid practices as firms await the ‘crunch date’ of the family and social welfare tender result, expected tomorrow and predicted by some to be ‘the blackest day in legal aid history’.
