AXA says what we all think on referral fees

I come from a depressing, end-of-the-line town called Clacton-on-Sea. You probably stayed there in a caravan once, but had the fortune to leave after a long rainy weekend. Not me, I was stuck there, with just candyfloss and those two-penny machines to see me through to 18.

Now, I’m allowed to say what I like about Clacton. But if any outsider ever dares do the same, they’ll have me to deal with. (Not much admittedly, but it sounds threatening.) Which brings me (and stick with me on this one) to referral fees.

Days of 100% damages payouts are over, says Hudson

Personal injury solicitors will have to ditch ‘100% compensation’ offers if they want to run a profitable business in future, the Law Society’s chief executive Desmond Hudson told members today.

In an address to members yesterday, Hudson said he was ‘angry’ the government had ignored pleas not to significantly reduce fixed costs for RTA work.

Last week the justice secretary Chris Grayling confirmed that fees for low-value claims will be capped at £500, a reduction of £700, from the end of April. The High Court judged the decision lawful in a legal challenge from claimant groups.

Firms warming to outcomes-focused regulation, says the SRA

Firms believe outcomes-focused regulation (OFR) ‘costs too much money and takes too much time’ – but they are warming to it, the Solicitors Regulation Authority reports today.

A survey of 1,000 firms on the impact of the first year of OFR shows that half of respondents are ‘relatively favourable’ to the process, compared with 36% prior to its introduction in 2011. However a year in to the new regime, many firms say they are not clear what outcomes the SRA expects to be delivered for clients.
